This may sound silly (and you’d be right to think so), but there’s more to it than meets the eye.

As it happens, saucepans play a crucial role in The Dead Shadow. More particularly, a saucepan on a specific head will play an important, plot-changing role in the story.
Why?
Because saucepans on heads are cool.

So, we’ve been having this running joke with some of our advanced readers who have devoured the e-book. We’ve been talking about saucepans, and as they’ve signed into the book tour, these same advanced readers have received saucepan-related freebies along with the first printed edition of The Dead Shadow.
So, they were quick to bring the joke to life on social media by posting selfies with a saucepan and calling it Saucepan Day.
What Does A Saucepan Day Selfie Look Like?
We have a few available, but essentially, this is your chance to use the saucepan day excuse to channel your inner Helena.
Who is Helena?
Helena is the daughter of a magician. She should have become a magician herself and received her Shadow at the end of her school years. However, as it never happened, Helena has been living as a recluse in a small village on top of the mountains in her home land.
Is she lonely? Not exactly. While she doesn’t have a Shadow of her own, she can hear all the magical Shadows, no matter where they are. She even decides to amplify their voices with a saucepan on her head to help her hear better. This is the origin of the saucepan day joke.
So, we’ve naturally embraced the saucepan day trend.

Is There A Hidden Meaning To Saucepan Day?
Perhaps not a hidden meaning, per se, but there is definitely a desire to be true to ourselves. Publication day is the opportunity for a lot of authors to post a selfie with their book. This is a lovely way of keeping their readers updated.
We love this approach. But we didn’t want to keep readers updated. We wanted to find our people and celebrate with them. Saucepan Day gives us the chance to share the fun and excitement with everyone, because, in the end, a book is for sharing. A book only exists once it’s found its readers. Being able to share the intricacies of our minds and connect to people in the process is truly magical. So Saucepan Day is a celebration of this connection and of the joy of finding people who relate to what we have to say.
Saucepan Day is for all of you who have made this possible by believing in The Dead Shadow.
How Long Is Saucepan Day Going to Last?
Technically, Saucepan Day was August 19th. So, why are we still talking about it?
There are many reasons.
First of all, on publication day, The Dead Shadow wasn’t instantly available in shops. It was the official day when the pre-order button turned into a simple order button online. However, many marketplaces and bookshops didn’t yet have their stock ready for Day One. So, for many readers, publication day wasn’t the day on which they got to hold The Dead Shadow.
UK readers who pre-ordered or ordered on publication day from places like Amazon or Waterstones may be receiving their books as I write. Readers in other parts of the world may have to wait another few days, such as those ordering from Barnes & Noble in the US, or Amazon France. So, we feel Saucepan Day should be when you finally get the book.
Secondly, we feel Saucepan Day is for our people, and they definitely deserve more than one day of celebration.
Thirdly, it’s going to last for as long as people join in. Hopefully, forever, but let us indulge a little more in the celebrations for now.
